Study this summer at the College of Agriculture and Rural Enterprise (CAFRE) in Northern Ireland through MSU's CAFRE - Summer Experiential Learning Program. This 6-week, 6-credit experiential program will focus on the Agri-Food Supply Chain.

This module takes a farm to table approach:  you will learn about the stages involved from the production of a food product to the final consumer, including:

  • Primary Production:  Agriculture, Horticulture, animal welfare, food ethics and sustainability.
  • Food Manufacture:  Introduction to dairy, meat, bakery, fruit and vegetables, drinks manufacture, food waste, sustainability.
  • Business Functions:  Forecasting, Planning, Procurement and Sales.
  • Distribution:  Distributions systems, modes of transport, international distribution, warehousing, inventory management.
  • Retail:  Types of retail, retailers' codes of practice, importance of sustainability in retail.

The program will include lectures, farm tours, industry visits and guest speakers, as well as laboratory sessions and tutorials.  You will attend the Balmoral Show, Northern Ireland's largest agri-food annual event, and will assist CAFRE staff with Open Farm Weekend.    The program will run May 7 to June 16, 2025.  There are no prerequisites, so any student sophomore-level or above, in good academic standing, is encouraged to apply.
